The Call

The rain fell in sheets across Seattle, a gray curtain that blurred the edges of the city into watercolor smears. Maya Chen stood at her floor-to-ceiling windows, phone pressed to her ear, watching the ferry lights blink through the downpour. She wasn't listening anymore.

"—and then Mrs. Patterson asked me about the casserole dish I borrowed in 1987, as if I would remember such a thing, and I thought, well, that's odd, because I haven't borrowed a casserole dish from anyone since your mother passed—"

"Rose." Maya's voice came out sharper than she intended. She softened it. "Aunt Rose. I have a deadline."

On the other end, her aunt's breathing hitched. The sound was small, but Maya caught it. She'd learned to read silences in her line of work—the pregnant pauses before a subject confessed something they'd never told anyone. Rose's silence had weight.

"Of course, dear. You're busy. You're always busy."

The words weren't accusatory. They were worse. They were resigned.

Maya turned from the window and surveyed her apartment—all clean lines and expensive nothing. The Emmy sat on the shelf like a headstone. She'd won it six months ago for a documentary about the vanishing fishing communities of Newfoundland. She'd called it *The Last Catch*. Critics called it "haunting." She called it her best work. She also hadn't slept through the night since the premiere.

"I'll call you tomorrow," Maya said. "We can talk then."

"Tomorrow might be too late."

The hairs on Maya's arms stood up. She didn't know why. Rose was eighty-two, lived alone in a town of six hundred people, and had been exhibiting signs of confusion for the past year. The doctor had said "age-appropriate memory changes." Maya had accepted that diagnosis. She'd even felt relieved—a neat label, a manageable problem.

"What do you mean, too late?"

"I mean the Hendersons." Rose's voice dropped to a whisper. "They're gone, Maya. Not dead. Gone. I went to their house this morning to return that casserole dish—the one Mrs. Patterson mentioned—and the house was empty. No furniture. No pictures. No sign anyone ever lived there."

Maya pinched the bridge of her nose. "Maybe they moved."

"They were eighty-three and eighty-five years old. Harold Henderson had a hip replacement last spring. People don't just move at that age without telling their neighbors of forty years."

"Forty years?" Maya frowned. "I've been coming to Hollow Creek my whole life. I've never heard of any Hendersons."

The silence stretched so long Maya checked to make sure the call hadn't dropped.

"That's exactly what I mean," Rose said finally. "You don't remember them. Nobody remembers them. But I do. I remember everything. The day they moved in. The azaleas Martha planted along the fence line. The way Harold would whistle 'Amazing Grace' while he mowed his lawn every Saturday at exactly ten in the morning. I remember them, Maya. And I'm scared."

Maya walked to her desk, pulled up Google Maps, and typed in Hollow Creek. The satellite image showed a cluster of roofs huddled against the foothills of the Coast Range, surrounded by a wall of green so dense it looked like the forest was trying to swallow the town whole. One road in. One road out. She'd always thought it was charming. Now, looking at it, she felt something cold settle in her chest.

"Have you talked to anyone else in town?"

"I tried. I asked Betty at the diner about the Hendersons, and she looked at me like I'd grown a second head. She said there's never been anyone named Henderson in Hollow Creek. She said I must be thinking of another town." Rose's voice cracked. "But I'm not, Maya. I'm not confused. I wrote it down."

"Wrote what down?"

"Everything. I've been keeping a journal. Every time I notice something that doesn't feel right, I write it down. The Hendersons. The way the photographs in the town hall seem to change. The fact that the old Miller place on Cedar Lane has been empty for three years, but when I asked about it, nobody remembered the Millers either."

Maya's hand paused over the keyboard. "How many people have you written down?"

"Seventeen. Over the past six months."

Seventeen people, apparently vanished from memory, and her aunt was the only one who noticed. Maya had spent her career documenting communities on the edge of disappearance—fishing villages, mining towns, places the world had forgotten. She knew what it looked like when a place was dying. But this wasn't dying. This was something else.

"I'll come," Maya said. The words came out before she'd fully decided. "I have some vacation time saved up. I'll drive down this weekend."

"No." Rose's voice was firm. "Come now. Tonight."

"It's a six-hour drive, and it's pouring—"

"Please."

That single word undid her. Maya had never been able to say no to Rose, not since she was six years old and her parents had died in a car accident she couldn't remember, no matter how hard she tried. Rose had taken her in, raised her, loved her with a ferocity that had sometimes felt suffocating and sometimes like the only solid thing in the world.

"I'll leave in an hour," Maya said.

"Bring your camera."

"My camera?"

"Document everything. Promise me."

"I promise."

Maya hung up and stood in the middle of her apartment, listening to the rain. She looked at her Emmy, at her carefully curated life, at the bookshelf full of awards and the empty refrigerator and the bed she'd made every morning for the past three years because there was no one else in it to mess up the sheets.

She packed a bag. Camera equipment. Notebooks. A voice recorder. The tools of her trade, the instruments she used to capture truth and pin it down like a butterfly in a display case.

She was halfway to her car when her phone buzzed. A text from Rose.

*I found a photograph. Of the Hendersons. From 1994. It's me and Martha at the county fair. I'm holding the blue ribbon I won for my apple pie.*

*The photograph is fading. I can barely see Martha's face anymore.*

Maya stared at the screen. The rain dripped off her hair, down her neck, soaking through her jacket. She didn't feel it.

She typed back: *Keep it safe. I'll be there by midnight.*

Rose's reply came seconds later: *Hurry.*

The drive was a descent into darkness.

Leaving Seattle felt like leaving the known world. The highway lights thinned, then disappeared entirely. The rain became mist, then fog, then something that wasn't quite either—a dampness that clung to the car and made the headlights feel weak and insufficient. Maya's GPS kept losing signal. The radio stations faded one by one until there was nothing but static and the occasional burst of a Christian talk station from some town she'd never heard of.

She passed through two towns before Hollow Creek. The first was called Pine Junction—a gas station, a diner, a sign advertising "World's Largest Frying Pan" that had been painted over so many times the original text was illegible. She stopped for coffee and found the cashier couldn't look her in the eye. The man kept glancing over her shoulder at the door, as if expecting someone to walk through it.

"Quiet night," Maya said.

"Quiet every night," the cashier replied. He was young, maybe twenty-five, with the kind of hollowed-out look she associated with veterans and disaster survivors. "You passing through?"

"Visiting my aunt. Rose Chen."

Something flickered in the man's eyes. Recognition? Fear? It was gone before she could name it. "Old Rose. Yeah. She's been... she's been asking a lot of questions lately."

"Is that a problem?"

The cashier shrugged. "Town doesn't like questions. Never has."

Maya wanted to press, but the man had already turned away, busying himself with a coffee machine that didn't need cleaning. She took her coffee and left. The bell above the door chimed as she stepped out, and she could feel his eyes on her back the whole way to the car.

The second town was called Crestwood, and she barely noticed it. A blinking yellow light. A shuttered hardware store. A church with a sign that read "Jesus Saves" in letters that were starting to peel. She drove through without stopping, her hands tight on the wheel, her eyes fixed on the road ahead.

And then, without warning, the forest closed in.

The trees on either side of the road became denser, older, their branches intertwining overhead to form a canopy that blocked out whatever moonlight might have filtered through the clouds. The fog thickened until Maya could barely see twenty feet ahead. She slowed to thirty miles per hour, then twenty. Her high beams seemed to bounce off the mist, creating a wall of white that was somehow more disorienting than the darkness.

A deer appeared in the road.

Maya slammed the brakes. The car skidded, fishtailed, came to a stop inches from the animal's flank. The deer didn't move. It stood there, steam rising from its flanks in the cold air, and stared at her with eyes that seemed too dark, too knowing.

And then it spoke.

No. That was impossible. Maya shook her head, and the deer bounded away into the trees, and the moment passed. But for one crystalline second, she could have sworn she heard a voice—a woman's voice, old and tired and somehow amused—say: *You shouldn't have come, girl. But you're here now. And here doesn't let go.*

Maya sat in the car, engine idling, hands shaking, for a full minute before she could drive again.

Hollow Creek appeared like a wound in the forest.

The trees pulled back, and there it was: a main street lined with buildings that hadn't changed since the 1950s. A diner. A hardware store. A post office. A church with a steeple that seemed too tall for the building beneath it, as if it were reaching for something it could never touch. The streetlights were old-fashioned, the kind that cast pools of orange light that didn't quite reach the sidewalks. Everything was wet. Everything was quiet.

Rose's house was at the end of Maple Lane, a narrow street that branched off the main road and dead-ended at the tree line. It was a small Craftsman bungalow with a wraparound porch and a garden that had once been beautiful but was now overgrown with weeds and wild roses that had escaped their trellises. The lights were on inside. Maya could see her aunt's silhouette moving past the window.

She parked, grabbed her bag, and walked up the path. The porch steps creaked beneath her weight. She knocked.

The door opened before her hand fell back to her side.

Rose looked smaller than Maya remembered. That was the first thing she noticed. Her aunt had always been a force of nature—short, fierce, with hands that could pull weeds and bake pies and hold a grieving child without ever trembling. But now she seemed diminished, as if something had been draining her from the inside. Her eyes were too bright, her skin too pale, her grip on the doorframe too tight.

"You came," Rose said.

"I said I would."

"I know. But I was afraid you wouldn't." Rose stepped back, and Maya entered the house. It smelled like lavender and dust and something else—something faintly metallic, like old coins or dried blood. Maya couldn't place it.

"I have something to show you."

Rose led her to the kitchen table, where a small leather-bound journal lay open. Beside it was a photograph in a silver frame. Maya picked up the photograph. It showed two women at a county fair, arms around each other, holding a blue ribbon between them. One was Rose, younger, happier, her hair still black instead of gray. The other woman was...

"Who is this?" Maya asked.

"That's Martha Henderson."

Maya looked at the photograph. The woman's face was blurred, as if the camera had moved during the exposure. But that wasn't right—the rest of the image was sharp. Rose's face was clear. The ribbon was clear. The Ferris wheel in the background was clear. Only Martha's face was smudged, like someone had taken an eraser to it and rubbed.

"Look at the journal," Rose said.

Maya opened it. The pages were filled with Rose's handwriting—lists of names, dates, observations. *Harold Henderson. Martha Henderson. Moved in 1983. Harold worked at the mill. Martha taught piano. They had a dog, a golden retriever named Buster. Buster died in 1998. Harold buried him under the apple tree in the backyard.*

But as Maya read, she noticed something strange. The ink was fading. The words she had just read were already harder to make out than the ones she'd read a minute ago. It was as if the journal were being written in disappearing ink, as if the very act of recording was being fought by something that didn't want to be recorded.

"Rose, this is—"

"I know what it looks like." Rose sat down heavily, her hands flat on the table. "It looks like I'm losing my mind. But I'm not. I'm remembering what everyone else is forgetting. And I don't know how long I can hold on."

Maya pulled out her phone. "What's the Hendersons' address?"

"123 Cedar Lane. But there's no point in going there tonight."

"Indulge me."

Maya typed the address into Google. She scrolled through the results. Nothing. She tried different searches: "Henderson Hollow Creek Oregon." "Harold Henderson Oregon." "Martha Henderson piano teacher."

Nothing. No records. No obituaries. No property deeds. No mention of anyone named Henderson ever living in Hollow Creek, Oregon, or anywhere else in the state.

She tried a reverse address search for 123 Cedar Lane.

The result came back: *No property records found for this address. This location appears to be undeveloped land.*

Maya looked up at her aunt. Rose was watching her with an expression that was part triumph, part terror.

"Now do you believe me?"

Maya didn't answer. She was already scrolling through the property records for the entire town of Hollow Creek. Six hundred residents. Two hundred and forty-three addresses. She cross-referenced the names Rose had written in her journal. Seventeen names. Seventeen addresses.

None of them existed.

The houses were there—she could see them on the satellite images, neat little roofs tucked into the trees. But the people who supposedly lived in them had no birth certificates, no driver's licenses, no tax records, no history at all. They were ghosts who had left behind empty houses and fading photographs and one old woman who refused to let them go.

Maya put down her phone.

"I'll stay," she said. "I'll figure this out."

Rose reached across the table and took her hand. Her grip was surprisingly strong.

"Be careful, Maya. The town doesn't like questions. And the thing that's doing this—" Rose's voice dropped to a whisper. "—it knows you're here now."

The lights flickered.

Maya looked up at the ceiling, then back at her aunt. Rose's face was pale, her eyes fixed on something behind Maya's shoulder.

"Don't turn around," Rose said. "Whatever you do, don't turn around."

But Maya was already turning.

The window behind her was dark, reflecting only the kitchen lights and her own face. And behind her reflection, just for a moment, she saw another face—old, female, with eyes that were black from corner to corner, and a smile that was all teeth.

Then the lights went out.

And in the darkness, Maya heard a voice—the same voice she'd heard on the road, old and tired and amused.

The lights came back on.

The window showed nothing but rain and night.

Rose was staring at her, tears streaming down her face.

"You saw her," Rose said. "You saw the Keeper."

Maya didn't answer. She was already pulling out her camera, her notebook, her voice recorder—all the tools she used to capture truth.

But for the first time in her career, she had the terrible feeling that some truths couldn't be captured.

They could only be survived.
